After hours of searching, we've finally seen the light on the meaning of this mysterious symbol, carved on a Christian grave stone.
Mr. Pflüger has kindly sent us a contemporary German version of the hymn What a Friend we have in Jesus. This version strips away many of the archaic terms used in the original version, making the hymn's message much easier to understand.

What is 'seiyaku'? Well, it's just the Japanese word for 'vow' or 'oath'; an earnest and solemn promise we promise never to break.
