Cross reference by category

There are hundreds of different crosses on this website. This page narrows your search down to particular categories and saves a bit of bandwidth.

(Of course, there is only ONE cross that is significant - the cross on which Jesus was crucified. And that saves something more significant than just bandwidth!)

  • Coloured crosses
When a colour is applied to a cross, the form is usually a basic Latin or Greek cross. The form bears no particular religious significance - simply easy to draw, easy to recognise, and doesn't detract the eye from the additional message given by the colour. When we see a red cross for example, we see either the colour red, or we see a sign of the humanitarian organisation. What we don't see, is a cross. (more...)
  • Adorned crosses
An Adorned Cross (sometimes called a Decorated Cross) is invariably based on a simple Latin or Greek cross so that the additional feature is emphasized. The additional feature usually becomes the main focus of the piece. (more...)
  • Crosses with lettering
When crucifixions were commonplace, it was customary to affix a board at the top of the cross detailing the crimes of the crucified person. If a Christian cross has an inscription, it is most often INRI, since this represents the wording on Christ's cross. Other lettering includes PAX and ΦΩΣ ΖΩΗ (Phos Zoe), and monograms such as ΑΩ, XP, ICXC, IHS and ΙΧΘΥΣ. (more...)
  • Crosses with plants, animals
These crosses have flowers, fruit, birds, fish, or some other link to the plant or animal kingdoms. (more...)
  • Crosses on flags
Many national and district flags feature Christian crosses. Although the flags feature a cross, usually the flag represents a country or region - not Christianity. For example, the Union Flag of the United Kingdom features three Christian crosses. But this flag represents the union of three kingdoms - not a triple dose of Christianity. Nevertheless, these flags do carry a symbol that has Christian roots and whether intentional or not, they can be perceived by Christians and non-Christians as religious symbols. (more...)
