First Corinthians chapter 13

Love is patient, love is kind...

Love is patient, and love is kind,
it is not jealous or prideful
love is not rude,
it is not selfish,
it is never angry, it is not happy with evil,
love is not happy with lies, but rejoices in the truth.

Love never gives up,
love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things,
endures all things.

Love never fails.

...or at least, those are the words spoken at many western-style weddings in Japan.

Usually of course, the Japanese version is given, but where the couple wants English, the above words are often read.

The above is not actually printed in any authorised version of the Bible. It is merely a simplified form, (supposedly) making it easier to understand for people whose first language is not English.

The authorised version is as follows. (In fact there are about twenty authorised versions in English. Most of them are very similar, and the following is from the New International Version.)

Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

It is not rude,
it is not self-seeking,

it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects,
always trusts, always hopes,
always perseveres.

Love never fails...
